Castles near Wickham Market
Framlingham Castle is situated about 5 miles from Wickham Market. It is a magnificent structure built in the late 12th-century. It is made up of 13 towers which are connected by a majestic curtain wall. Adjacent to the castle is the mere which acts as a lake and a wetland. The mere is believed to be about 3,000 years old and the castle's reflection in the mere enhances this panoramic setting. Framlingham Castle is steeped in history and was the first place to crown an English Queen: Mary Tudor was crowned at the castle in July 1553, making her the first Queen of England. Surrounded by parkland and estates, it was once at the centre of a vast network of power and influence.

Orford Castle is situated about 10 miles from Wickham Market. The castle was built on the orders of King Henry II in 1165, and is unique due to it still having a complete and most unusual polygonal tower keep. The castle sits in the charming village of Orford surrounded by beautiful Suffolk countryside. Orford itself was once a major trading port in medieval times.
The castle is remarkably intact allowing visitors to explore from the basement, through the lower and upper halls to the roof where there are magnificent views seaward to Orford Ness. Visitors can wander around the rooms and passages which lead to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets.
